The Olympics and Paralympics…..Use It!

Don’t you just LOVE the Olympics? I do.

It’s been sad to have to wait a year for the Tokyo (2020) games. Now that it’s over, and from what I witnessed, we should grasp sporting events like these and use them to fire us up.

Sorry it’s been a while since my last blog by the way. I’m guessing you’ve not been losing sleep waiting for it, ha! I’m not lying when I say work is busy, it’s amazing how much time each client takes up. Every Friday I prepare new training plans, daily check ups and 1 hour 121 video call workouts daily as well. It’s just time consuming when you also have to be a dad, find time to cycle and also keep on top of other bits and bobs.

Anyways, back to the blog! I know the Olympics finished a few weeks ago but if your anything like me, you can still feel the ‘aftershocks’ of amazing performances and the motivation they give you. For me, it was the incredible performance on the cycling track by British rider Jason Kenny in the sprint final. He simply rode away from the rest of the field, he saw his opportunity to break away and just went for it with 3 laps to go (I think it was 3). Pure bravery and guts in bucketloads. There were obviously many other outstanding moments too, the Olympics really are a magical time.

It’s also the feeling that you could be that person too. Remember, all an athlete is is someone who has persevered and stuck at their sport through thick and thin. Never giving up and getting to the top is something we all DO have in us. Natural talent is an advantage of course, but I’ve seen MANY athletes with natural talent who lack perseverance. So talent gets you nowhere without the courage to see it through.

The signs are everywhere, pointers showing us the way. And yes, the Olympic Games is one of these signs. We can harness the energy and commitment we see on the TV and use it to stoke our own fires.

I feel an even bigger motivator for you to get your arse in shape is the Paralympic games which are on at the moment. You only have to switch on Channel 4 to witness some amazing human beings, making the most of what they have. Next time you struggle to haul your perfectly healthy body out for a run, remember just how lucky you are!

The bravery and heroism of athletes in the Paralympics is testament to what human beings are truly capable of. In the face of such adversity, such unfair disability, some of us are quite literally…..machines. To keep going even when the odds are stacked against you, wow, it makes me proud to just be the same species!

I think I will leave this blog there. There is more that could be said by using the fire to your advantage. To be honest though, If witnessing an athlete who has no arms and no legs compete in the 200m freestyle Paralympic finals doesn’t get you fired up to start looking after yourself, just what will motivate you?

I’ll leave that with you.
